There are several hundred members of the Royal Over-Seas League living in Hong Kong. They come from all walks of life and represent many nationalities, particularly Commonwealth nationalities.
Hong Kong Chinese citizens are eligible for full membership of the League, as are the citizens of all Commonwealth countries. Associate membership is available to other nationals.
All our members here pay their subscriptions to the League's head office in London. Indeed, many of them belong to the League because it gives them the opportunity to stay at Over-Seas House in the centre of London and the equivalent clubhouse in Edinburgh. The hospitality available at the many reciprocal clubs throughout the world also attracts interest.
Here in Hong Kong we have an organising committee and we aim to hold regular functions. These are of great variety, and have included the following.
- Lunches, with guest speakers, at the Hong Kong Club, American Club, Foreign Correspondents' Club, Helena May and China Club.
- Guest speakers have included Dame Anson Chan, Sir Donald Tsang, Ms Christine Loh, Mr Mike Rowse, Sir Colin Imray, Mr David Tang, Lord Norwich, Mr Alan Leong, Mr Frank Ching and the Commissioner of Police.
- Celebrations of Commonwealth Day each year, in March.
- Charity fundraising activities.
- Jubilee Garden Party, with TRHs the Earl and Countess of Wessex.
- Receptions at the British Consulate-General and at the residences of the New Zealand, Australian, Canadian, British, and South African Consuls-Generals.
- Receptions at the residence of the Harilela family.
Events planned for the future include:
- Lunches and dinners with distinguished speakers.
- Cocktail receptions.
- Receptions at consulates and at the private residences of Consuls-Generals.
- Additional functions, some jointly with other clubs and societies in Hong Kong.
- Musical evenings.
